How Changes at Yahoo May Impact Your Business

On Thursday it was reported that Yahoo was shuttering a handful of it's web properties including Delicious, Yahoo Buzz, MyBlogLog, and AltaVista. (One example report from PC Magazine). Now it looks like using the word "shuttering" was premature, at least in the case of social bookmarking site Delicious, which you may already be using to optimize your search engine placement. Apparently Delicious will continue to operate independent of Yahoo.

Stephen Chapman at ZD Net expands on this here.

Geolocation Means More Customers

If you are like me you are still trying to wrap your head around the benefits of geo-location programs like Foursquare. As a private individual, I continue to resit using geo-location because of security concerns which seem founded in common sense. Why tell the bad guys where I am (or am not) at any given moment on the day?  Still, millions of people are doing that, and the concept of "checking in" with a retail store is catching on as a way to expand a customer base.

Scott Bishop at Mashable does a good job explaining the benefits of locating customers and getting your head in the geo-location game. Read more here.

Is Your Business Social Yet?

I was just poking around the Internet to see if there's any data on small businesses and social media. Isn't the Internet great for poking around for knowledge on any subject? I know, that was more than obvious, but I digress. I found a report released in February of this year on data collected in 2009 and I must say I was a little underwhelmed with the results. Even though the report said the number of small businesses using social media to reach out to customers or otherwise promote their products or services had doubled from the previous year, only 1 in 4 small businesses had arrived. Read the entire study here.

Considering the nature of business owners to mimic success whenever possible, and the relative low cost of integrating social media into a company's marketing effort, I don't think I am being overly optimistic to say when a study like this is repeated, the numbers will be double again what they were in February.
